The WesternCape has a high density of nature reserves and natural areas to explore. The area is well known for it’s scenic beauty and it’s extensive network of hiking trails.
The Garden route has amazing biodiversity, the natural areas include magnificent beaches, rugged sea cliffs and headlands, coastal fynbos, afromontane forest, plantations, indigenous forest with giant yellow woods, elders, stinkwood trees, ironwoods and other giants, Cape fold mountains, spectacular with their convoluted forms and scenic lagoons.
Most trails have fantastic facilities, such as well appointed hiking huts and restrooms at trail heads. Trails are well laid out and make the most of the natural beauty of the area.
Many of the overnight trails are popular and need to be booked well in advance, often up to a year in peak seasons.
There are lovely Slack packing trails options where luggage can be moved from one hut to the next and clients only carry day bags.
SEASONS The Garden Route is as the name implies, a natural garden and like all gardens it requires rain. It can rain at any time of the year, with no real distinction between rainfall during the different seasons, you need to be prepared for showers throughout the year. AUTUMN -April,May; fairly stable weather, May has the least rainfall and the days can be spectacular, still, warm and clear, a colourful pause before winter.
WINTER -June to end of August; Generally good rains, but July being the coldest month has relatively low rain. This is often referred to as the ‘secret season’ locals know that between the winter rains are the most magnificent days that the area offers. It snows in the mountains in Winter and general temperatures in the coastal areas hover around 20C.
