The Sentinel Peak, a guided technical rock climb in the Northern Drakensberg South Africa is a tremendously satisfying adventure. This iconic mountain is the highest free standing peak in the area and stands guard over the Western edge of the Amphitheatre. The rock face is dramatic with cliffs hundreds of meters high.

After hiking to the base of the Sentinel, the start this Drakensberg climb is a steep scramble up grassy screed slopes and knife edge ridges with surprise views to the base of the range. The summit reveals exhilarating outlook over the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, Tugela Falls & Devils Tooth as well as the Maluti mountains and the rolling hills of Kwa Zulu-Natal. After abseiling back down enjoy lunch with a spectacular view & then continue the descent to the Sentinel Car park. Email us for details.

The Sentinel Peak can be climbed as a day climb using one of the many Drakensberg Lodges as a base camp, alternatively we spend a great 2 days in the mountains and camp overnight along the Tugela River on the Amphitheatre, giving you great views of the Sentinel Peak before you climb it.

Although previous climbing experience is of benefit, and our Climbing courses are an excellent place to start, anyone who's fit and confident with heights should be able to climb the Sentinel peak on the standard route. The more difficult routes are suitable for more experienced climbers.
