What do you need to be a mountain or adventure guide, instructor or to offer adventures? QUALIFICATIONS. By law you need to be registered with the Dept. of Environmental Affairs and tourism as a guide and to do that you need; 1. Core Unit- generic tourism guiding unit standard 2. Elective Units e.g. Abseiling Supervisors course 3. First Aid certificate
ABSEIL GUIDE COURSE - Based on the MDT Abseil Supervisor Syllabus An entry level qualification for prospective mountaineering adventure guides or anyone who wants to run abseiling commercially. This course is ideal preparation for assessment as a MDT Abseil Supervisor or for THETA Mountaineering Guide Unit Standards TG 20 and TG 21 towards a National Qualification in Mountaineering Guiding. Course Content Equipment, knots, personal and client abseiling skills, abseil instruction and communications, anchor setup, fixed and releasable setups, hauling systems, rope ascending, rescue techniques, emergencies and client care. Course requirements: Age - 18, previous abseiling experience e.g. Abseiling adventure Duration: 5 Days
TOP ROPE GUIDE COURSE - Based on the MDT Tope Rope Supervisor Syllabus An alternate entry level qualification for prospective mountaineering adventure guides or anyone who wants to run rock climbing adventure or instruct at an artificial wall or climbing gym. It is also a 2nd step for prospective mountain professionals, wanting to qualify as a rock climbing or mountaineering
guide. This course is ideal preparation for assessment as a MDT Abseil Supervisor. # Course Content Equipment, knots, group management, anchor principles and setups, client care and communication, guide books and route finding, dealing with emergencies. Course Requirements: Age- 18 years of age and previous experience of basic rope work. Previous sport climbing experience required e.g. Basic and Sport Climbing course Duration 2 Days
SINGLE PITCH ROCK CLIMBING GUIDE - Based on the MDT Single Pitch Supervisor Syllabus This is usually the 3rd step for prospective mountain professional, wanting to qualify as a rock climbing or mountaineering guide. Once qualified, you'll be able to guide single pitch sport and traditional routes commercially. This course is ideal preparation for assessment at that level or towards National Qualification in Mountaineering Guiding. Course Content Equipment, knots, group management, anchoring principles and setups, client care and communication, guide books and route finding, dealing with emergencies, leading on sport and traditional routes. Course Requirements -previous experience on sport and traditional routes. Participants should have completed the Abseil Guide Course. Duration 2 Days
BASIC MOUNTAIN WALKING GUIDE COURSE - Based on the MDT Basic Mountain Walking Syllabus This course is an entry level qualification for anyone who wants to guide groups of walkers on demarcated footpaths or hikes in South Africa, it teaches all the skills required to become a competent trail walking guide. This course is ideal preparation for assessment as a MDT Basic Mountain Walking Leader or for THETA Mountaineering Guide Unit Standard TG 19 towards a National Qualification in Mountaineering Guiding. Course Content Equipment, trip and route planning, group management, hiking skills and camp craft, client care and communication, map reading and basic navigation, basic wilderness first aid and dealing with emergencies. Course Requirements 18 years of age and previous hiking experience.
Duration 5 Days Last 2 days include an overnight outing.
