The Sentinel Peak is a great climb in the Drakensberg, it's the highest free standing peak in the Northern Drakensberg, South Africa standing 3165m high.
We start this Drakensberg climb with a scramble up steep grass covered screed slopes to the base of the rock pitches. After preparing our gear we'll tackle the rock pitches. The summit reveals exhilarating views of the Drakensberg Amphitheatre, Tugela Falls and Devils Tooth. After abseiling back down the rock face, we stop for a hikers lunch and continue our descent to the Sentinel Car park.
OPTIONS: The Sentinel can be climbed as a day climb or you can camp overnight along the Tugela River on the Amphitheatre before climbing the Sentinel Peak.
The Sentinel offers climbing routes of various grades from climbs requiring only a good level of fitness and head for height, to rock routes for experienced climbers wanting a challenge. Please email us for more info info@govertical.co.za
THE DOUBLE SUMMIT ADVENTURE
A rewarding three day two night wilderness camping adventure where we climb two summit's on the Northern Drakensberg escarpment. The first summit is Mont-Aux-Sources 3282m which is the highest peak in the area, it's a non technical trekking ascent using the chain ladders to gain access to the Mont-Aux-Sources Plateau and the Amphitheatre.
At night, camp is set up along the Elands and Tugela Rivers which have their sources in the high altitude wetlands on top of the escarpment. Our second summit is the Colossal Sentinel Peak which stands on the western end of the Amphitheatre, this is a technical Rock route. The Sentinel summit has spectacular views. Between summits we have the opportunity to explore the Mont-Aux-sources Plateau, Crows nest, Ribbon Falls, the Amphitheatre and Tugela Falls.
GOVERTICAL WILL PROVIDE: For all of the Mountaineering adventures we will provide the technical gear for the rock climbs, relevant park fees, meals and GoVertical guides.
CLIMBING EXPERIENCE: Although previous climbing experience is of benefit, and our Climbing courses are an excellent place to start, anyone who's fit and confident with heights should be able to climb the Sentinel peak on the standard route. The more difficult routes are suitable for more experienced climbers.
