DRAKENSBERG TREKKING

Join GoVertical's Drakensberg mountain guides for a guided trekking experience along the Drakensberg Escarpment which is a true wilderness area separating South Africa's coastal lowlands from the Highveld plateau.

Spend the days backpacking through The uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a World Heritage site of incredible basalt cliffs, giant peaks and dramatic pinnacles. Explore the high altitude wetlands, hike across pristine Drakensberg streams & spend your evenings gazing at the stars which seem just inches above you.

THE AMPHITHEATRE TREK

An exploration of the splendid Amphitheatre, 2 nights of camping in the Northern Drakensberg with spectacular views, clear rivers & rugged mountains. Take in the summit of Mont-Aux-Sources and the top of the Tugela falls.  We head up onto The Mont-Aux-Sources-Plateau, climbing the famous chain ladders to get there & set up camp along the bank of the Elands River. While we prepare dinner, you can relax & enjoy the sunset over the Maluti Mountains.

The following day we hike to the highest point on the Northern Drakensberg Escarpment, Mont-Aux-Sources 3282m with it's commanding views of the Amphitheatre and the plateau riddled with streams far below. We descend, to our 2nd night's camp on the Amphitheatre.

On our last day we hike to the Famous Tugela Falls with magnificent views of the Amphitheatre, Devil's Tooth & then follow the Tugela River towards its source, descending past the imposing Sentinel Peak.

THE NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG TRAVERSE - SIX DAYS

This guided trek, renowned as one of the World's top 10 treks, starts in the Northern Drakensberg at about 2400m. You'll hike up to the chain ladders using them to ascend onto the Mont-Aux-Sources plateau and the Drakensberg Amphitheatre..


The Drakensberg escarpment rises & falls at around 3000m above sea level. The trek traces the escarpment southward with the huge valleys & peaks to the left & the rugged terrain of the Lesotho highlands to the right. Clear mountain streams ensure a plentiful water supply, at night you'll camp in mountaineering tents in a wilderness setting.

After 5 days of traversing past many of the dramatic highlights in the Northern Drakensberg including The Amphitheatre, Mnweni Pinnacles, Mponjwane. The Source of the Orange River & the Rockeries, the 6th day is spent on descent at Cathedral Peak, with accommodation, a hot shower and celebratory dinner awaiting you.


The 'Transberg' adventure takes place in a beautiful rugged isolated mountain range; to enjoy it fully, Backpackers must be fit, determined, enjoy wilderness camping & able be to carry their own provisions

THABANA NTLENYANA: HIGHEST PEAK IN THE DRAKENSBERG 3482m

A scenic two day, one night Circular Trek in the Southern Drakensberg and the Lesotho Highland Escarpment incorporating the summit of the highest point in the Southern Africa: Thabana Ntlenyana (3482m) on the Lesotho side of the Drakensberg.


From the town of Underberg, GoVertical will transport you in a 4x4 vehicle up the dramatic twists & turns of Sani Pass as it winds it's way up the Southern slopes of Drakensberg. Sani pass gains altitude a steep 1300m over 22km. You'll pass through the South Africa border post & to the mountain Kingdom of Lesotho.

The trek starts out along the Sani River ascending close to the Southern Drakensberg escarpment with views over the spectacular Mkhomazi Wilderness area. From the summit of Thabana Ntlenyana there are commanding views of the Drakensberg range & the Lesotho Highlands.

We spend the night camping on the slopes of Thabana Ntlenyana, your meals prepared for you by GoVertical guides. A final treat before descending Sani pass is a stop at South Africa's highest Pub and restaurant.
